چکیده

The electromagnetic field distribution as well as the resonating frequency of various modes in superconducting cavities are sensitive to small geometry deformations. The occurring variations are motivated by measurements of an available set of resonators from which we propose to extract a small number of relevant and independent deformations by using a truncated Karhunen–Loève expansion. The random deformations are used in an expressive uncertainty quantification workflow to determine the sensitivity of the eigenmodes. For the propagation of uncertainty, a stochastic collocation method based on sparse grids is employed. It requires the repeated solution of Maxwell’s eigenvalue problem at predefined collocation points, i.e., for cavities with perturbed geometry. To ensure consistency of the solution among the various eigenvalue problems and for numerical efficiency reasons, an eigenvalue tracking technique is proposed that is based on homotopies between collocation points and a Newton-based eigenvalue solver. The approach can be efficiently parallelized while tracking the eigenpairs. In this paper, we propose the application of isogeometric analysis since it allows for the exact description of the geometrical domains with respect to common computer-aided design kernels and for a straightforward and convenient way of handling geometrical variations.

Calculation of High Frequency Fields in Resonant Cavities Based on Perturbation Theory*

The knowledge of the eigenmodes of resonant accelerator cavities is essential for the determination of their performance characteristics, comprising resonant frequencies and field distributions inside the cavities. Apart from the material properties the eigenmodes of a cavity depend on its geometry. In spite of the high elaborateness during the complex fabrication process, minor deviations of t...

Probabilistic damage assessment of a seven-story RC building slice using Bayesian FE model updating

In this paper, Bayesian finite element (FE) model updating is applied for uncertainty quantification in the multi-stage damage assessment of a seven-story reinforced building slice. The results of the Bayesian updating scheme are analyzed using a detailed uncertainty and resolution analysis which involves computing the posterior statistics and solving an eigenvalue problem. It is shown that the...

Robust Sliding Mode Controller for Trajectory Tracking and Attitude Control of a Nonholonomic Spherical Mobile Robot

Based on dynamic modeling, robust trajectory tracking control of attitude and position of a spherical mobile robot is proposed. In this paper, the spherical robot is composed of a spherical shell and three independent rotors which act as the inner driver mechanism. Owing to rolling without slipping assumption, the robot is subjected to two nonholonomic constraints. The state space representatio...

Preparation Studies for Secondary Electron Emission Experiments on Superconducting Niobium

Accelerator driven transmutation of waste is one complementary approach to deal with spent nuclear fuel as compared to permanent storage. High-energy protons generated by a particle accelerator collide with a heavy metal target producing neutrons. Long-lived radioactive isotopes interacting with the neutrons transmute into shorter-lived isotopes. To generate the high-energy protons efficiently,...

A cw Heavy Ion Linac Based on Superconducting CH-Structures

According to the Unilac upgrade program for the SHE research at GSI, a new high energy part of the High Charge State Injector (HLI) has to be worked out. One of the versions of this linac foresees the acceleration of the highly stripped ions with charge-to-mass ratio of 1/6 delivered from the existing HLI at 1.4 MeV/u. The output beam energy should allow experiments at the Coulomb barrier and i...
